Proposed Requirement for E-Verify Use by Governmental Employers

⚠️
PROPOSED LEGISLATIONThis bill has been introduced but has NOT been signed into law. Legislative proposals may be amended, passed, or fail to advance. This is not current law.

This proposed bill would require all state and local governmental employers in Tennessee to verify the work authorization status of each prospective employee through the federal E-Verify program before hiring them, starting July 1, 2026. It also authorizes the attorney general and reporter to enforce this requirement against local governments and allows for withholding funds from noncompliant local governments. This change would affect governmental employers and their potential employees.
