Proposed Sentencing Requirement for Second Degree Murder Convictions
⚠️
PROPOSED LEGISLATIONThis bill has been introduced but has NOT been signed into law. Legislative proposals may be amended, passed, or fail to advance. This is not current law.
This proposed bill would change how sentences are determined for individuals convicted of second degree murder by knowingly killing another person. Before this proposal, the sentencing range was not specifically defined in terms of offender classification. If enacted, it would require that such offenders be sentenced as no lower than a Range II offender, which typically means they face more severe penalties. This change affects those convicted of second-degree murder and could lead to longer sentences for these individuals. The effective date is currently unknown.
